A concerned ratepayers group on the Kapiti Coast have formed a support group for those members of the community who wish to stand as independent candidates for Council.

One of the great citizen-pushback success stories also comes from the Kapiti Coast - the Kapiti Coastal Ratepayers Union (CRU). From their website:
Coastal Ratepayers United Inc (CRU) is a broad based community group that has been effectively representing ratepayers in getting hazard lines removed from properties.
CRU has had amazing successes and had bad science overturned.
The fight continues as the Regional Council and the Government via Dept of Conservation, Ministry for Environment, NIWA, are making policy decisions that will affect everyone. So CRU needs to continue making strong representations.
